Spirent Supports DISH Wireless to Test its First-of-its-Kind 5G Network

:

DISH Wireless needed to autonomously test its 5G network core and validate its performance. Spirent provided vendor-neutral validation expertise and technology so DISH could test and validate with confidence to assure 5G core readiness for live operation.

Adopting a technology leadership strategy in October of 2021, DISH Wireless had the objective to become the world’s first telecom company to run its service on the public cloud. To achieve that, they needed to continuously integrate functionality into its 5G network to rapidly deliver leading-edge solutions to both retail and enterprise customers. This initiative would also involve a partnership with AWS on cloud infrastructure.

A worthy goal, but by no means a simple journey to venture alone to assure their goal. For it all to come together, DISH needed to autonomously test its 5G network core and validate its performance. That’s where Spirent came in to support DISH’s realization of superior agility in deploying a cloud-native Open RAN 5G network, while ensuring enhanced customer experiences.

DISH’s approach leveraged Spirent’s well-established 5G expertise, proven technology-led test services and methodologies, and years of experience in global 5G ecosystems. Spirent offered vendor-neutral validation expertise and technology so DISH could test and validate with confidence to assure 5G Core readiness for live operation.

As the solution progressed, DISH leveraged Spirent’s library of automated compliance, capacity, and performance test suites, as well as test cases, to verify 5G functionality and measure system performance, and in doing so, accelerated deployment procedures. By automating the testing process, DISH could continuously verify real-world performance and resilience during its network rollout, proving the public cloud is telco-grade, and scaling up a continuously improving system.

By automating the testing process, DISH could continuously verify real-world performance and resilience during its network rollout, proving the public cloud is telco-grade, and scaling up a continuously improving system.

A solution like this doesn’t happen overnight. Ultimately DISH created their own Testing as a Service (TaaS) solution – a fully automated, API-driven, vendor-agnostic framework that can run tens of millions of tests per day. When their testing solution finally achieved a critical stage of fruition, DISH Wireless data scientists described the solution in a blog, which included a number of Spirent’s key contributions to their success. With Spirent’s support, DISH built their TaaS solution to test their 5G networks and its slices so it provides big data to help build data products for immediate use for insights and improvements.

This testing solution collects data when building new applications and different layers (e.g., RAN, core, and transport), and troubleshoots to efficiently identify potential problems before they become defects. It comprehensively and quickly addresses latency and network breakage challenges.

Spirent continues to collaborate with DISH Wireless and similar transformative companies as a strategic partner in test and assurance.
